A native to Lincoln, Laura graduated from Lincoln East High School in 1998. Laura then went to Iowa City, Iowa to attend the University of Iowa. She graduated with her Bachelor's of Arts in Theatre Arts with minors in English and Communication Studies. She also earned her Iowa teaching license and taught for a year in Lisbon, Iowa. 

In 2004, Laura moved back to Lincoln to teach at Lincoln High School. She has taught English 10, Composition, American Literature, Women's LIterature, Reading Ideas, Reading Elements, Reading Advancement, Oral Communication, and Competitive Forensics. From 2004-10 Laura coached the speech team.  In 2010 and 2013, Laura became Lincoln High's Literacy Coach. Laura also became Lincoln High's Reading Facilitator in 2011 until 2021.

Laura earned her Masters at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln August 2010 with a major in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education (TLTE) with an emphasis in Langauge, Literacy and Culture (reading). Her Masters project was a paper investigating the reading strategies and skills necessary to navigate and comprehend the Internet.
