I have been a teacher for nine years. My first year of teaching was in third grade, and eight years with first grade. I was thankful to have a long-term sub position at Pershing, because this opportunity led me to a wonderful atmoshpere at Pershing. My experience with third grade allowed me to understand the needs of First Grade students, and what skills they need to be successful in later years.
Throughout my teaching years, I have a growing family. I have a daughter that is 7 and a son that is 6. We will be welcoming baby number 3 in November! We enjoy many things, especially going on walks with our dog, singing, playing, laughing and traveling to see our families. My husband is currently in school getting his teaching degree.
Math- Students learn various addition and subtraction strategies throughout the school year. We also focus on time, money, measurement and geometry. Our smart goal for this year is to improve our Basic Facts Timed Tests for addition and subtraction. We will be working on ways to improve these skills. New to Pershing this year is our Math Intervention time, where students are given opportunities to revisit, practice and expand their mathematical skills.
Language Arts- Students learn various decoding/phonetic and comprehension strategies. We are working on ways to increase fluency by building sight word vocabulary. Students learn how to use the 6-traits of writing.
Science/Social Studies/Health- Students learn about animals and habitats, magnets and soil. They also learn about our country, our world, and our community. Students learn about ways to be healthy, by eating nutritious and being drug free.
Technology- Students have a variety of opportunities to use computers and laptops. We have 3 mobile labs where students can access learning activities in their own classrooms. Various math learning activities and phonics activities are easily accessed through these computers.
