Lawrence "Bump" Christensen was born and raised in Northwest Iowa. He attended West Monona High School, where he participated in football, baseball, track, and wrestling. Upon graduating in 1999, Bump attended Wayne State College where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. During his time at Wayne State College, Bump was an All-Conference linebacker and spent his last year of school as a student coach. He continued collagiate coaching at the University of Minnesota-Moorhead, where he was a Graduate Assistant coach and began coursework in Educational Administration.
Bump relocated to Lincoln in 2006. He began coaching football for the Links that year, and worked as a substitute teacher. Bump joined the Lincoln High Physical Education Department in 2007. He teaches Weight Training and Fitness for Life, and continues to coach football. Bump also works with off-season athletes in the weightroom after school.
Bump's wife, Kristin, teaches elementary school in Lincoln. They have 2 daughters, Leah and Aubrey.
