After graduating from David City High School in 1980, Mrs. Kovar attended Lincoln School of Commerce, getting an Associates Degree in Fashion Merchandising. She worked in retail and as a law-firm receptionist for two years, while teaching dance at her David City studio on the weekends. In 1984, Mrs. Kovar went back to school at the University of Nebraska and received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Education. She then started her teaching career in Elmwood-Murdock in the fall of 1988, where she taught for ten years in grades 5, 6 and 8. Some of her highlights of her first teaching experience include teaching American History, math and English. Besides staying busy with her regular teaching duties at Elmwood-Murdock, Mrs. Kovar received a Masters of Education degree from Doane College in 1993, directed elementary musicals, wax museum productions, and a created a comprehensive Olympics unit for the entire Elmwood-Murdock elementary. After the 1997-1998 school year Mrs. Kovar took a two-year leave of absence to run an in-home daycare and spend more time with her young children.
Then in the fall of 2000, Mrs. Kovar reestablished her education career and began teaching for Lincoln Public Schools. She spent one year at Randolph Elementary in 6th grade before moving to 4th grade at Morley Elementary, where she taught until 2015-2016. One of Mrs. Kovar’s greatest accomplishments during this time came in May of 2012, when she received a Masters of Historical Studies Degree from Wesleyan University. Mrs. Kovar changed her teaching assignment to 2nd grade for the 2016-2017 school year and continues to enjoy teaching history, math, literature, and engaging with her many students and their families.
When she’s not in her classroom, fondly known as Kovar City, Mrs. Kovar enjoys spending time with her husband Mick; daughter Megan, son-in-law Devan, grandson Ryan and granddaughter Aubree; son Adam and daughter-in-law, Brittney and grandson, Jackson. She especially enjoys the singing and playing and teaching that accompany her role as Grandma. But when Mrs. Kovar is not with her family, you might find her enjoying her crafting hobbies, gardening, reading, working on home decorating projects, or just relaxing and watching a good movie.
