About Me

 My Teaching Philosophy

Through my pedagogical philosophy and related ideas, I strive to educate students with the best practices and research, with objectives that are tied to state and national standards, in which they will have optimal education and will be moral agents of transformative change for a better quality of life for all people. The outcome beyond learning and teaching specific course content is recognizing that education is a life-long process and not just a preparation for a future career. Thus, I will prepare my students to be life long learners by teaching them explicitly, strategies of self-regulation in which they will be reflecting on their progress by making portfolios of their work. Through this I intend to empower my students with motivation to continue to work hard and realize their potential by having pride in their own work. With that, learning and teaching explore different notions of how to view knowledge and how to teach it by contextualizing learning through collaborative interaction and forming a community among the learners. I strive to make the best environment in which my students will reach their optimal potential and I believe that is achieved through promoting learning through the use of the best practices and research.

Hello! Welcome to Spanish One. People at Pound call me Señorita or Navas or Miss Señorita Navas. I answer to all! I love helping others and sharing and caring is my jam! That is why I chose to be a teacher because I get to do this all day everyday. When I am not at school I play on three co-ed soccer teams at the new Bison Sports Complex off of S. 1st and Vandorn. When I am not playing soccer I am usually doing something outside. I love to go on walks in my neighborhood, or really long bike rides on the trails through Wilderness. I have two cats Archie and Cray and they are my fur babies -you might hear many stories about them. I also love to garden and cook. Food is life! I live to eat. I love to travel and meet new people. Another hobby I have is to keep myself busy with meeting new foreign exchange students at the University; to help keep my mind open to other cultures and languages. It's also a really great way to practice my Spanish with people from all around the world!

This is a synopsis of the history of my past experiences and as a Spanish teacher for LPS students, tenure classes focused on secondary education, and what I have undergone as a secondary education major at the university of Nebraska at Lincoln. I have undergone preparation for the teaching in areas of language and pedagogy. I have a Russian minor and a Spanish major and many experiences abroad. I have spent a semester studying in Samara, Russia and a semester studying in Bilbao, Spain. I have experienced a few teaching practicums where I was in the classroom helping students in a level II ELL class at North Star High School, a practicum teaching Spanish 2 at East High, and student teaching Spanish 1 at Irving Middle school. I was also an after school program organizer and teacher at Mickle Middle School for 3 years in the ETS program funded by the University of Nebraska. I taught at Lefler Middle School my first year of teaching and now I am currently a teacher at Pound Middle School. At Pound Middle School I am also the soccer coach for 7th and 8th grade girls and boys co-ed teams. During the summers, I am the Camp Director at Wilderness Nature Camp where I had previously worked as a camp counselor for eight years. I am also a Teacher Naturalist out at Pioneers Park Nature Center where I teach students about basic sciences, the native prairie, forbes and grasses, and the history of Nebraska homesteaders, and Native Americans on the prairie. The link above is to my portfolio, which is based off of the ACTFL standards of foreign lanugage and foreign language pedagogy, and throughout this portfolio you will find out more information about my career as a student and a teacher, and my involvement in the community.
